The history of the CyberKnife is closely associated with Stanford University professor of neurosurgery John Adler. This man was present at the birth of the cybernetic knife when the first patient was treated at Stanford in 1994. By 2001, before the CyberKnife was approved by the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration), it was used as a prototype intended for clinical testing. Since 2001 when the cybernetic knife started to be produced on an industrial basis there have been about 160 of them in operation, 70% in the United States. Apart from Ostrava, there are 12 units in Europe.

In the first half of the 20th century radiation instruments were not strong enough to treat tumors inside patients' bodies. This changed in the 1950s when, incidentally also at Stanford, a linear accelerator was developed. This radiosurgical instrument makes application of depth doses possible and dramatically broadens the possibilities for treatment of oncology diseases.
